Two local poets will launch their newest books of poetry: Downward Dreaming by Marilyn Johnston and Finches in Kilmainham by D. Walsh Gilbert.

Downward Dreaming: The poems in this book present poignant portraits of the author's family members and of her own struggles to be seen and known. Through a personal lens, the poet sheds light on human dilemmas shared by so many of us. As the speaker in the poems gains perspective and wisdom, so do readers, who may find in these poems reflections of people they interact with every day.

Finches in Kilmainham: This is the story of Ann Gallagher, jailed in 1850s Ireland—just one little girl trying to make her way in the world even as the evils of famine, nationalism, and anti-Catholicism conspire to test her courage and restrain her from finding her true Irish roots. Although she and the others in the poems are fictional characters, their experiences accurately reflect those of far too many people who suffered through similar ordeals. The stunning lyricism of the poems in this book make their situation all the more poignant.

An open mic will precede the featured readings for any audience member—one or two one-page poems please. Young/student poets are encouraged to read. Sign-up at the door.

Discussion, Q&A, and Book signings will follow the readings.
