Farmington Servant Culture in the Early 20th Century

We welcome back David Hopkinson for a peek into the real lives of domestic servants in Farmington during the 1900s!

David Hopkinson, Ph.D. is a retired Clinical Psychologist living in Virginia. He grew up in West Hartford as a descendant of a dozen European immigrants who took jobs as servants in Hartford and Farmington early in the 20th century. On his father’s side he had one grandfather and one great uncle who were butlers at Oldgate and Millstream Manor, and one grandmother was briefly attended Theodore Pope as a personal maid. Two great-aunts were a residential maid and a cook in the Borough. In recent years he researched and wrote an unpublished manuscript on domestic servants in Farmington, available at the Main Library.
